PIASTRO PLAYS WITH SYMPHONY
Noted Violinist Offers Glas-ounow's Concerto At Final Philharmonic Program
The fourth and last concert of the season of the Nassau Philharmonic society drew a large audience to the Rivoli theatre in Hempstead Satur-day morning. Mischel Pia.stro, concert violinist, was guest artist for the occasion and played the Glasounow "Concerto for Violin," with the orchestra. The program opened with the "Ov-erture from Tannhauser," George Por-ter Smith directing the orchestra. 'This was followed by the Siegfried "Funeral Music," after which Mr. Mastro played. During the intermission, Jann48 H. VanAlen, president of the society, greeted the guests and made formal preSentativa to James N. Gehrig, the first flesident of the organization, of a leather-bound copy of Brahms's "First Symphony," in recognition of Mr. Gehrig's services when the so-ciety was first formed. Mr. Van Men then thanked the audience for its support during the current year and bsiaiught its further patronage for the rent season's pro-gram. The .orchestra then played, in the order named: "Sorcerer's Apprentice," by Dukas: "The Engulfed Cathedral," by Debussy, and Ravers "Bolero." The Debussy number had local interest in that its present arrangement for orchestra, was the work of Miss Edith McIntosh of Rockville Centre, from the piano script. The appearance of. iblisehel Pia.stro was arranged Oar-iced by a group of Freeport women who have recently rganized. as the Philharmonic auidl-iary. Mrs. Sherman, Holaday is thy_ president.
