Rockville Centre - The Edith McIntosh School of Music at 48 Hillside Ave, Rockville Centre will begin its 56th year of teaching when it opens for the fall term Sept 2. The school was founded in1920 by Edith F. McIntosh, a young pianist whose musical experience had already included studios in the United States and Europe with some of the world's foremost teachers. The methods of instruction, which evolved from the early experiments of Miss McIntosh and her staff, are still in use at the school and have served as models for the preparatory programs of music schools and colleges in the local and statewide areas. The music theory books written by Edith McIntosh have remained best-sellers in their field for more than 20 years and are in constant use in music schools around the country. In 1936 the Music Center was completed. This building was designed to house the School and was considered a unique architectural accomplishment to its pioneering use of space. In its first year in the new building, the school taught a student population of 350. Today the school continues its tradition of quality instruction. Its graduates have achieved fame as both performers and music educators. In addition to the school's regular offerings in the music field, this year marks the beginning of its program in modern dance, tap, acrobatics, and ballet. The school also offers many unique workshops and will be presenting a program of concerts and performances free to the public celebrating the Nation's Bicentennial year.
